Valentine’s Day Literacy Centers

February is right around the corner, so I thought I’d share how we transform the Alphabet and Beginning Sound Literacy Bundle into the perfect centers for Valentine’s Day! Just add a few accessories and you are all ready for the holiday of hearts and love.

Hands-On Learning: Alphabet and Beginning Sound Center

Nothing draws children in like a light pad! Seriously, they are so fun and my boys flock to it as soon as I turn it on.

For the activity, I set out the sheet on the light pad with the hearts and invited my boys to cover the letter H with the hearts. They asked for more pages so we made our way through the alphabet!

They had fun making designs with the hearts on the light pad when they were finished with the alphabet activity.

Playful Learning: Alphabet and Beginning Sound Center

For these activities, we used the same hearts as the previous center.

First, my boys used the hearts to trace the letter Hh. There is also a blank sheet without the letter outlines, but my boys aren’t quite ready for that so we used the letters as a guide.

The IKEA frames hold the activity invitations perfectly!

Next, my boys made pictures that start with the letter H. My youngest traced the heart outline with the hearts and my oldest son made a happy face on the open prompt page. It was nice to have differentiated sheets for both of them.

Say It, Find It, Make It, Write It Mats with Beginning Sound Stones

We use this center all the time! It was fun to change it up for Valentine’s Day. Here’s what we did:

  1. First prepare the stones. It’s a simple process. You just need the pictures that are included in the resource and Mod Podge! You can see how I make the stones here.
  2. Put the stones and hearts in a tray.
  3. Kids search for the beginning sound stone, make the letter with hearts, and trace the letter.

Here’s a tip: Laminate mats and use Expo markers to use over and over again!

Sensory Writing Tray Prompts

We LOVE sensory writing trays!  They are the perfect solution for children who are not quite ready for pencil and paper work but want to work on letter formation.

Writing trays are so inviting and really simple to switch up. We decided to add red cookie sprinkles for Valentine’s Day! My boys were so excited to start writing letters in the tray that they could hardly wait for me to pour the sprinkles!

Here is a tip: Use clothespins to hold on to the letter cards.
