Even though I made these for my preschool students, my 8 and 10 year old boys and were both instantly drawn to them! I’m so excited to share these with my little ones at school and see their magnetic tile wildflower garden creations.

These tiles are incredibly durable and the pressed flower stickers have a strong adhesive.  This DIY toy is perfect for little hands!

Ready to give it a try!? Here’s what you’ll need..

Supplies for the DIY Pressed Flower Magnetic Tiles:

• Clear Magnetic Tiles– This activity has been such a big hit that the first set of magnetic tiles that I used is sold out on Amazon and their website! They tend to go back in and out of stock, so you can TAP HERE to see if they are currently available. If they are not in stock, then try the following brands! I have used these as well and they work well for the DIY! This Magna-Tile set comes with 16 tiles and I found its the perfect amount to mix in with our regular colorful set of tiles. Imagsimags also work well and of course Connetix Tiles are gorgeous! If you have a different brand and would like to use the 2 sets together, please double check to make sure they will work!
• Pressed Flower Stickers– The adhesive on this brand are super strong and great for this activity! I also love the butterflies, mushrooms and leaves in this set . I purchased a set with dragonflies and beetles, but it’s not currently available. Here is the same brand with dragonflies and butterflies.
• Light Pad– This is optional, but a fun accessory for any magnetic tile fan!

Here’s How I Made the Magnetic Tiles:

These are so easy to make! Just peel the flowers and stick them on the magnetic tiles. I placed 3 flowers on each tile and found that looked best. I trimmed the sticker stems to make the flowers fit on the inside flat part of the tile. They looked beautiful!

I mixed up the colors and flower types to make the magnetic tiles look like a wildflower garden when stuck together! Try identifying the flowers with your child. It’s a fun challenge and great way to learn nature identification. 

They looked so beautiful in the sunlight! This presents a great opportunity to learn about shadows! The flower shadows were gorgeous and fun to look at.

We had fun stacking them on our sliding door. The tiles made a pretty sun catcher! They are also fun to arrange on the refrigerator or any metal surface. 

These are also so fun to play with on a light pad! The magnetic tiles are almost like DIY pressed flower specimens. I’ve had this same light pad in my preschool classroom for years and it has proven to be durable and long lasting!

Children will love stacking the tiles on and around the light pad! 

You can mix these in with the rest of your magnetic tiles or create a challenge for your child! Here is challenge idea: Have your child build a house out of your regular magnetic tiles and then create a wildflower garden for the home out of the DIY flower tiles!

We made Easter egg suncatchers similar to these hearts last year! They turned out so pretty, that I wanted to try them for Valentine’s Day. These make the perfect handmade Valentine and are a great alternative to the typical sugary treats that everybody hands out. 

If you are making these for a home decoration, I suggest making a bunch of them and sticking them to a window! They look so pretty as a large group of hearts. 

Ready to give it a try!? Here’s what you’ll need..

Supplies:

• Dried flowers– It’s the middle of winter for us, so I purchased some pressed flowers from ETSY. The large pressed poppy flowers are from this shop and the wildflower mix are from this shop! I love supporting these beautiful pressed flower businesses from ETSY, but these flowers took over a week to arrive at my house. If you need pressed flowers quickly, then I suggest going with Amazon. I’ve used many pressed flowers from Amazon for my crafts and am happy to recommend them as well. I love this set from Amazon. 
• Wax paper
• Towel or ironing board
• Scissors 
• Twine
• Iron
• Heart template-  I drew my own and cut it out.

Step 5:

Once the heart is ironed, cut on the heart line.

This heart craft makes such a gorgeous indoor decoration! You can hang them in the window as a suncatcher or on a shelf. They also look beautiful as garland.

20+ Pressed Flower Crafts

Making a pressed flower lantern is so easy and the results are always gorgeous. The pressed flowers will keep their vibrant color since they are preserved, making this a colorful and beautiful decoration for your home! 

Ready to give it a try!? Here’s what you’ll need..

Supplies for your Pressed Flower Lantern:

• Jar- Any pasta sauce, juice or jelly jar will work!

• Mod podge- I used the matte variety for the the purple pansies lanterns and it gave the lantern a frosted effect. I used the glossy variety for a colorful wildflower lanterns shown at the end of the post and that gave the lantern a beautiful shinny finish! I suggest the combo pack to try each type and it also comes with foam brushes!

• Foam brush– These are very helpful for spreading Mod Podge on the jar.

• Pressed flowers– If you don’t have any flowers to press or are feeling impatient, you can always find a variety of pressed flowers on Amazon or purchase a bouquet to press at home. Here is a beautiful variety pack that includes pansies on Amazon and here is a beautiful wildflower pack from ETSY! 

• Flameless tea light candle

• Twine or string

• Tweezers- These are helpful for picking up delicate pressed flowers.

• Equal parts cooking oil and baking soda- This mixture will remove stubborn labels or printed expiration dates from jars and leave them sparkling clean.

How to Press Flowers:

Look for flowers with a single layer of petals and have fun experimenting with different types of flowers! We love pressing pansies and wild violets during spring. Don’t forget to press the leaves!

Once you pick your flowers or buy a bouquet, place them between two pieces of wax paper in a book and close the book. Place a couple more books on top and check back in a week or two. If they are not dried, then let them press for another week and check on them again. Continue this cycle until they are dried. I have a more extensive guide on pressing flowers in 20+ Pressed Flower Crafts. 

How to Remove the Label from your Jar:

Step 1:

Give your jar a hot water bath! Let your jars sit in hot water for about 10 minutes to loosen the glue behind the label. Be careful when handling the hot jar and don’t use boiling water! Take the jars out of the water and peel off as much of the label as you can at this point.

Step 2:

Next, mix equal parts cooking oil and baking soda. I used two tablespoons of each. Rub it on what is left of your label and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Peel off the rest of the label and rub the glue off the jar. I like to fill the jar with more warm/hot water at this point to continue loosening the glue. You can also run the jar under warm water and add a little more baking soda mixture to get the last bits and pieces off.

How to Make the Jar Lantern:

Step 1:

Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to a third of your jar with your foam brush. Don’t put too much Mod Podge on your jar at one time or it will dry before you get the chance to apply the pieces of nature.

Step 2:

Gently pick up the pressed pieces of nature with your fingers or tweezers and place them on the Mod Podge. I had to press some of the thicker leaves for about 30 seconds to help them stick to the Mod Podge. Finish your jar and let the Mod Podge dry completely.

Step 3:

After the first layer of Mod Podge is dry, add another layer of Mod Podge over the jar and pressed pieces of nature. This will protect the pieces of nature and keep them from peeling up as they dry.

How to Make the Jar Lantern Handle:

Step 1:

Tie twine around the neck of the jar two times and give it a double knot on one side of the jar. Cut any excess twine.

Step 2:

Take another piece of twine and weave it through the twine on one side of the jar. This can be tricky since the twine is tied tightly around the neck of the jar, but this method worked for all of my jar crafts! Once you wiggle/push the twine through, tie another double knot on that side. Do this same step on the other side of the jar. Again, cut any excess twine.

Your handle is all set. You can take this on an evening nature walk! Make sure you bring it inside when finished because Mod Podge is somewhat water resistant, but not waterproof.

They also make the perfect decoration for a table or shelf. They add a touch of whimsy to any space! Here is another version of our pressed flower lantern. This lantern is made with pressed wildflowers and sealed with the glossy Mod Podge. Which version do you like more!

How We Used Story Stones on Earth Day

Today we are mixing a couple of my favorite things- flowers and candles! These were really fun to make and I look forward to trying more as our seasons change so I can use flowers from our own yard!

If you are wondering if this craft is suitable for children, I would definitely suggest assisting them with the process. My boys were able to help a bit, but required guidance. Children will need developed fine motor skills to be able to handle the flowers and melted wax at the same time. If they are too young for that step, they can always help collect and press the flowers!

Ready to make a few pressed flower candles?! I bet you won’t be able to stop at just one!  Here’s what you’ll need….

Supplies:

• Taper candles- white or colorful
• Pressed flowers and leaves– You can either purchase them online or gather flowers and press them yourself. We love making these flowers around Christmas time and this set has the perfect colors for holiday candles! If you are looking for a simple tutorial, check out my post that explains how to press flowers!
• Tea light candles and match or lighter
• Small paintbrushes

Here’s How We Made The Candles:

Step 1:

Light the tea candle and wait until the it has melted a bit. Gently dip the paintbrush into the melted wax (obviously avoid the flame!) The melted wax will act as a glue and seal the flowers on the candle. The wax dries VERY quickly so you will need to work quickly too!

Step 2:

Set your first flower in place. 

Step 3:

Dip the paintbrush in the candle and gently spread the melted wax on the flower. If you get a clump of wax on your paintbrush, simply set it in the melted wax area of the candle and it will melt away. 

Step 4:

I found it helpful to press down stubborn areas of the flowers and leaves into the soft wax.

You can add just one piece of nature per candle or a bunch! It looks beautiful either way.

This flower petal art project is so fun! Unleash your creativity by trying a variety of petals and leaves to make different types of butterflies. Adults will enjoy making more complicated designs and younger children will be thrilled to make a lifelike butterfly with just 4 flower petals!

Ready to make one or two? Here’s what you’ll need….

Supplies:

• Flowers- Collect flowers in your yard. **Try bouquet flowers if they are currently out of season in your area. You can also purchase already pressed flowers here. You can find many different options so look around on Amazon to see the different pressed flower options.**
• Stones- We grabbed a few from our nature collection. You can also find stones in craft stores, landscape shops,  or Amazon.
• Mod Podge– Play around with gloss and matte finish to see which you like more. 
• Tweezers– These are helpful for small and delicate petals.

Here’s How We Made This Beautiful Flower Petal Art:

Step 1:

First, you need to press and dry your flowers. If you don’t have a method that you like for pressing flowers, you can try the book or microwave methods. 

Step 2:

Arrange your flower petals on a stone to make sure your butterfly design will fit. Each stone has it’s own unique shape, so I like to find the perfect match before bringing out the Mod Podge.

We used a thin dried plant stem for an antennae, but you could also draw antenna or small details on the wings or bodies with thin sharpies. 

Step 3: 

Next, seal the flowers on the stones with Mod Podge. Start this process by taking the flower petals off the stone and applying a generous amount of Mod Podge on the stone.

Then put the flower petals and other plant pieces back on the stone. 

Last, apply another layer of Mod Podge on the flower. Since I put a lot of sealer on the flower, this will take about an hour to dry.

Here are more butterflies that we made. It’s hard for me to choose my favorite! I think the pansies make unique wings and layering petals create a beautiful effect. Which do you like thde most?! Preserving Flowers in Resin

Magical Pressed Flower Lanterns

I shared these photos on my Instagram and Facebook pages last week and I had a bunch of questions about how to make these pretty cookies. The process is easy, but thought it would be best to share my tips and tricks here!

These edible flower cookies cookies are almost too pretty to eat! Ready to make a dozen or two? Here’s what you’ll need….

Supplies:

• Sugar Cookies Mix- Try a recipe from scratch or purchase a premade mix. I used this Betty Crocker mix for the photos you see in this post, but will be trying this organic mix soon!
• Edible flowers- I found a pack at my local grocery store (by the refrigerated packaged herbs) called Shenandoah Organic Edible Flowers. You can also forage wild violets, dandelions, or any other common edible flower!
• Baking supplies: Rolling pin, mixer, baking sheet, and mixing bowl.

Here’s How We Made Edible Flower Cookies:

Step 1:

First forage edible flowers or purchase edible flowers from the grocery store! If you are foraging flowers, I suggest using a plant identifier app called “Picture This” to make sure you are picking edible flowers. Also, read up a bit on foraging before you head out! I found this article helpful. 

Step 2:

I suggest drying your flowers and pressing them for a couple of hours before you use them for baking. This will help them stay flat when you press them into your cookies.

Step 3: 

Follow the particular instructions for baking your cookies. I followed the drop cookie recipe on my box and it called for an 8-9 minute baking time. I popped the cookies in the oven for 7 minutes, pulled them out, and gently pressed the flowers on top of the cookies. The petals instantly stuck to the warm cookies. 

Then, I sprinkled some Turbinado sugar on the cookies, put them in the oven for 2 more minutes, and put them on a drying rack to cool off. It’s fun to experiment with different types of flowers to see how they lay on the cookies!

My boys took the first bites and they absolutely LOVED the edible flower cookies! Adding fresh flowers to cookies makes them feel just a little more special. They are the perfect Easter, Mother’s Day, or special summer treat!

I absolutely love pressing flowers! It’s such a fun process and if done correctly, pressed flowers can be used in crafts and enjoyed for a long time! 

If you are looking for a place to store all of your pressed flowers, then I suggest this beautiful Wooden Pressed Flower Organizer! I absolutely LOVE mine!

Here are a couple of tips when choosing flowers to press:

Not all flowers are easy to press and dry. I look for flowers with naturally flat blooms such as violets, daisies, black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne’s Lace and other single-petal flowers. Ideally you want to pick flowers in the morning after the dew has evaporated and try to harvest them when they are just before their peak.

Here are a few flower pressing methods to try. You can play around with these options and see which works best for your particular flowers and craft. Click on each method to learn more:

Press flowers in a book- This method takes 2-3 weeks, but I love the results of this method!

Press flowers in a microwave– This method is quicker, but takes a little more trial and error. 

If you don’t have access to flowers to press, you can purchase them online!

This activity is so easy to prep and will lead to hours of outdoor play and exploration for kids! You can make any cardboard frame to fit any learning theme or area of interest for your child. I added colors on the side our board to encourage a nature color scavenger hunt. My boys had fun moving around the cardboard frame to make different egg patterns and designs!

Ready to make one or two? Here’s what you’ll need….

Supplies:

• Cardboard– These cardboard sheets are a convenient option if you don’t have any to reuse. 
• Exacto knife– This is the easiest way to cut cardboard. *For adult use only*
• Markers (optional) 
• Nature!

Here’s How We Made This Nature Walk Activity:

Step 1:

First, cut out a shape. Since Easter is right around the corner, I cut out an oval shape to look like an egg. You could also try a bunny, butterfly or any other shape that sounds fun!

This step is difficult and should be done by an adult. 

Save the egg cut out! You can use it to make an egg nature weaving board, poke holes in it and use it as a flower threading board, or just glue nature onto the egg!

Step 2:

Next, you can label your board or just keep it blank. I added colors to the side to encourage a little color scavenger hunt! This kept my boys out and exploring for a long time. 

You could also list different types of nature to search for on the side. I think I’ll try that next time:) 

My boys loved searching high and low for different colors and textures. 

We also had fun identifying nature together. I like to use the app called Picture This to identify interesting plants and other pieces of nature. 

We also learned that crocuses close up on cloudy days. I never noticed that before!

We had to see what a snowdrop egg would look like! This sweet flower is our favorite sign of spring. We will hold on to this egg frame and use it throughout the week. I can’t wait to see what other pretty flowers pop up before Easter!

I’m so excited that the days are finally getting longer and warmer! We still have a bunch of snow, but it’s melting quickly! The boys are running around our yard looking for the largest patch of green grass and spotting new birds everyday. Spring is definitely on its way! 

I have a bunch of fun new craft ideas to share with you this season. Let’s start with this gorgeous egg craft! 

Ready to give it a try!? Here’s what you’ll need..

Supplies:

• Dried flowers– It’s the end of winter for us, so I purchased some from Amazon! Or check out THIS POST to learn how to press your own flowers in books and check out THIS POST to learn how to press your own flowers in a microwave. 
• Wax paper
• Towel or ironing board
• Scissors 
• Twine
• Iron
• Egg template-  I drew my own and cut it out.

We are so excited with how simple this recycled art project is and how gorgeous they turned out! They look so pretty hanging in our home and the pieces of nature look so neat with light shinning through the window. I feel even better about this project because we are reusing pieces of plastic containers and plastic wrap that would have otherwise gone to the recycling bin. We love our new decoration and know you will too!

Ready to make a few nature suncatchers?! Here’s what you’ll need..

Supplies:

• Branch
• Shapes cut out of a plastic lid
• Plastic wrap
• String 
• Paper punch
• Pressed pieces of nature. Grab them from your garden or order already pressed flowers and leaves.

Here’s How We Made Our Nature Suncatchers:

Take the labels off of your plastic containers and draw simple shapes on the containers to cut out. I suggest drawing circles and ovals. We tried crescent moons and stars, but the pointy edges were difficult to work with during the plastic wrap step.

Step 2:

Arrange pressed flowers and leaves on the piece of plastic. Kids will love helping with this step! It’s a great way for kids to get creative and connect with nature! 

If you don’t know how to press nature, you can check out the steps HERE or you can purchase already pressed pieces of nature on Amazon. We used the leaves and flowers from Amazon because we don’t have flowers to press yet. Hopefully in a couple of weeks our wild violets will make an appearance! The leaves from the pack were pretty delicate to handle but look so lovely in the nature suncatchers. 

Step 3:

Put a piece of plastic wrap on top of the flowers and piece of plastic. You will see that I don’t have a ton of excess plastic wrap. Too much will be difficult to work with in step 4. 

Press the plastic wrap on the plastic piece and gently run your fingers over the pieces of nature to flatten the plastic wrap out. Yes, the plastic wrap will stick to the piece of plastic just like it does when you put it on your leftover dishes after dinner!

Step 4:

Flip your nature suncatchers over and wrap the excess plastic wrap around the piece of plastic. You just need a little bit to secure it to the other side. You will be surprised to see how well this works! Try to experiment with different amounts of plastic wrap. Just make sure to trim away unnecessary pieces of wrap. 

Step 5:

Punch a little whole at the top of the suncatcher and tie a piece of string through it to so it can be hung. We hung ours from a beautiful piece of drift wood and it’s hanging from our living room window. This beautiful piece of recycled art makes me smile each and every time I walk past it!

For some reason, these are really difficult to photograph, but I tried my best:) These photos don’t do this craft justice! As you can see, you can barely even make out the plastic wrap. The little bit that you can see, make it look like a piece of stained glass!

It’s difficult to choose, but I think this might be my favorite suncatcher!

We took our nature suncatchers outside to see how they looked hanging from our bush and they look so pretty! They would make a beautiful decoration for an outdoor party. 

Check out this gorgeous suncatcher in the middle! These flowers are so beautiful and vibrant! I started thinking these would be beautiful with tissue paper too.
